Resurrection Fugue for Voices
Matthew - After the sabbath,
Mark - When the sabbath was over, and very early
John - Early
Luke - on the first day
Mark - on the first day
John - on the first day
Matthew - as the first day
Matthew, Mark, Luke, John - of the week
Matthew - was dawning,
Mark - when the sun had risen,
Luke - at early dawn,
John - while it was still dark,
Matthew, Mark, & John - Mary Magdalene
Mark - and Mary the mother of James,
Matthew - and the other Mary
Mark - and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. They went to the tomb.
Matthew - went to see
Luke - they came
John - came
Luke & John - to
Matthew, Luke & John - the tomb.
Luke - taking spices that they had prepared.
Mark - They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?”
Matthew - And suddenly there was a great earthquake;
Mark - When they looked up, they saw that
John - and saw that
Luke - They found
Mark, Luke & John - the stone
Mark - which was very large, had already been
Luke - rolled away from
John - had been removed from
Luke & John - the tomb
Matthew - for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and
Matthew & Mark - rolled back
Matthew - the stone and sat on it.
Luke - but when they went in, they did not find the body.
John - Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept,
Mark - As they entered the tomb,
Luke - While they were perplexed about this,
John - she bent over to look into the tomb;
Mark - they saw a young man,
Luke - suddenly two men
John - and she saw two angels in white,
Mark - dressed in a white robe,
Matthew - His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.
Luke - in dazzling clothes stood beside them.
Mark & John - sitting
John - where the body of Jesus had been,
Mark - on the right side;
John - one at the head and the other at the feet.
Mark - and they were alarmed.
Luke - The women were terrified
Matthew - For fear of him the guards shook
Luke - and bowed their faces to the ground,
Matthew - and became like dead men.
John - They said to her,
Luke - but the men said to them,
Matthew - But the angel said to the women,
Mark - But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed;
Matthew - “Do not be afraid;
John - “Woman, why are you weeping?”
Luke - “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
Matthew - I know that
Matthew & Mark - you are looking for Jesus
Mark - of Nazareth,
Matthew & Mark - who was crucified.
Matthew, Mark, & Luke - He is not here.”

Comments
The important thing about this piece is how it is paced, the rhythm. Directors should treat it as a musical piece. When writing it I was reminded of the music of Philip Glass. Don't try to make sense of the words, let the words wash over the congregation like a wave.
