Exodus Now - Betrayal
Becky – Mom, I can’t find my permission slip.
Gail – Becky, you’re going to be late for the bus.
Jack – I’ll just have a cup of coffee this morning. I need to get to the office early. Gail, why is there a suitcase…
Becky – But I need it for the field trip!
Gail – What field trip?
Becky – The waste treatment plant! It’s today!
Jack – Gail, why’s there a suitcase sitting in the entryway?
Gail – Oh, that permission slip! I think I remember… where did I see it?
Becky – Hurry, mom! The bus is here!
Jack – Gail, why’s there a suitcase sitting in the entryway?
Gail – Refrigerator! Got it! Here ya go, sweetie…
Becky – Thanks, mom. See ya, dad. [exits]
Jack – Bye, Becky. Gail, why’s there a…
Gail – Remember to get your shoes at school ! You have dance this afternoon.
Jack – Gail…
Gail – You should get a move on.
Jack – I know, but…
Gail – Have I been a good wife to you, Jack?
Jack – Well, yeah… I mean, of course you have, honey. But…
Gail – You’ve been cheating on me, Jack.
Jack – Wha…? No. Gail, I swear. I haven’t…
Gail – What time were you home last night?
Jack – Eight… maybe eight thirty…
Gail – Nine sixteen. What time were you home the night before?
Jack – Honey, I was working. I swear…
Gail – Nine fifty five. And the sad thing is, Jack, I believe you. I believe you are at work. I believe you are catching up on paperwork and getting ahead on tomorrow’s workload. I believe you, and that is sad.
Jack – Then… What is that suitcase doing in the entryway?
Gail – It’s simple. You’ve got a choice to make. You want to be my husband? Then be my husband. You want to fool around…
Jack – I’m not fooling around!
Gail – But you are. You have made work your mistress, Jack. And I’ve been patient, Jack. But you have to make a choice as to who you are married to – me or your job. So you have a simple choice. I’ve packed a bag for you and you can take it or leave it. Your choice. So, what’s it going to be, Jack?
