"Exodus Now - Presence" | Play | Exodus 33:12-23

Exodus Now - Presence

Narrator – Long ago in India a Raja and his son were riding around their kingdom on the back of an elephant. The Raja was showing his son all the wonders of the kingdom he would one day inherit, when his son, unexpectedly, spoke up…

Son – Father…

Raja – Yes, what is it, my son?

Son – I have a question…

Raja – Oh, it is only proper and right that you would. Go ahead son, and ask me anything you like!

Son – What is truth?

Narrator – The Raja was astounded by his son’s question – “What is truth?” – and smiled with pride.

Raja – I will show you, my son. See those three blind beggars over there? Come here, you three! If you can tell me what I am, I will give you meat and wine!

Narrator – The three beggars came forward, hands outstretched, following the voice of the Raja. One came up and touched the elephant’s trunk and said…

Beggar 1 – You are a snake!

Narrator – And he ran away in fear. The second one came and touched the elephant’s leg and said…

Beggar 2 – You are a tree!

Narrator – And he leaned up against the trunk to shelter in its shade. The third reached the tail and said…

Beggar 3 – You are a bit of rope!

Narrator – And thinking he was worthless, the beggar stormed away, angry.

Narrator – The Raja had his servants give all the beggars wine and meat and a place to spend the night, and then he turned to his son and said…

Raja – What is truth? My son, truth is an elephant and we are all blind beggars.
